Adding Classes

Change of Major or Minor

Change of major and minor forms can be found in our Change of Major FAQ page. Changing a major is also available online for select majors through the Student Center.

Withdrawing

Students who are considering a course or semester withdrawal should consult with the course instructor or academic adviser to make sure this is the best option. Use the below information to select the most relevant withdrawal form.

Withdrawal Card: Used to withdraw before the semester starts.

Current Semester Course Withdrawal: Used during the semester, must get course department approval.

Current Semester Withdrawal: Used during the semester, turn in directly to the Registrar's Office.

Past Semester Course Withdrawal: Used for past semesters, must have supporting documentation and approval from the course department.

Past Semester Withdrawal: Used for past semesters, must have supporting documentation, turn directly in to the Registrar's office.

Forms can be emailed to records@sfsu.edu, must include photo ID when sent this way.

Transcript Requests

Students who attended Spring 1985 or after can order transcripts online. Use one of the two options below to access the transcript ordering portal.

SF State Gateway: Must have Password and ID # to access.

Parchment Portal: Must create an account, can only use if Gateway was not used previously.

Withdrawal Card

Students who drop all classes during the first three weeks of instruction are not considered enrolled for the current semester.

1. The Withdrawal Card must be completed and signed before being submitted to the Registrar’s Office if you wish to drop all classes within the first three weeks of the Semester.

2. Students who reside on campus and have an active lease must contact the Housing Office.

3. Students who drop all classes after the first day of instruction must contact the Bursar's office regarding possible prorated fees.

Current Semester Course Withdrawal

Students may withdraw from a course a maximum of two times and from no more than 18 semester-units of course work. This does not include total term withdrawals of all courses or classes taken in CEL (College of Extended Learning).

1. Instructor, Chair, and Dean must approve all withdrawals from individual courses.

2. An approved withdrawal will show as a grade of "W" on transcripts.

3. Documentation must support serious and compelling reasons. Examples are: serious medical condition, emergency travel due to family situation, death of a close family member during the semester the class is taken, documentable mental health concern.

Current Semester Withdrawal

Students who withdrawal for the semester for serious and compelling reasons (before the last four weeks of instruction) will need to turn in a completed Current Semester Withdrawal form before the published deadline.

1. An approved withdrawal will show as a grade of "W" on transcripts.

2. Students who withdrawal for the semester after the deadline (during the last four weeks of term) must include supporting documentation of serious and compelling reasons.

Retroactive Course Withdrawal

Students who withdrawal for the semester for serious and compelling reasons will need to turn in a completed Retroactive Semester Withdrawal form.

1. An approved withdrawal will show as a grade of "W" on transcripts.

2. Students who wish to retroactively withdrawal for a term must include supporting documentation of serious and compelling reasons along with a completed Retroactive Term Withdrawal form.

3. Documentation must show proof of why you were unable to complete the course and must match the dates of the term in which you enrolled for the course.

4. Due to the required approval from the Board of Appeals & Review processing times can take up to a month.

Graduation applications for Spring 2019 are due by Friday, February 15.

Diploma General Information

Diplomas are ordered after an application goes through final processing, this final processing only happens after official semester grades are released, grades for Fall 2018 are due on January 4, 2019. Ordering happens every second Friday of the month and is shipped by standard USPS mail.

Commencement Questions

San Francisco State University’s 118th Commencement has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at AT&T Park. The ceremony will be held at the downtown ballpark for the fifth consecutive year, and more than 30,000 graduates, family members and friends are expected to attend.

Only those students who graduated the previous Summer, those who graduated the previous Fall, and those who have applied for current Spring or Summer graduation are eligible to participate in the ceremony.

Campus Financial Obligations

A campus financial obligation hold is placed when there is any past due balance left outstanding on a student account. Students can remove their SFO hold by paying their past due obligation. After making the payment, the hold will release by midnight. Detailed instructions are located HERE.

Transcript Holds

Holds on transcripts are generally visible and include detailed instructions on the student center. If no transcript hold is visible or if the transcript ordering portal tells you to contact us, then please submit a ticket on our Contact form, or call 415.338.2350.

Immunization Forms

Campus Clarity

Think About It, by Campus Clarity, is a web-based sexual assault prevention and alcohol abuse awareness program and survey. The hold that this program places on student accounts would be released automatically within 2 business days of the surveys completion, or by showing the Registrar's Office proof of completion.

International Health Insurance

All F-1 visa status students must have health insurance during the entire semester. The hold is usually released within 2 business days of purchase; for more information on the insurance available please visit the Office of International Programs site HERE.

2. Select Option 2.

3. Enter SF State ID # (If ID is not known click HERE).

4. Click the Yes, email me a password reset code button.

Note: If prompted to answer security questions, then attempt to answer all six security questions to reach the email reset code option.

5. Go back to www.sfsu.edu/reset

6. Select Option 3

7. Enter SF State ID # and the Reset Code.

8. Follow reset prompts.

Students Attending Before 1985

Students who attended Spring 1985, or before, must mail or submit in person the Transcript Request Form to the Registrar's Office. Archive records are not available online.
